PCC MISSION MOMENTS Working towards a brighter future

Gifts to Presbyterians Sharing support Tyndale St.-Georges Community Centre in Montreal’s Little Burgundy neighbourhood as it works to ensure that each member of the community has the opportunities and skills to help realize their potential. The high school perseverance program matches students with peers or older students. Participants gain skills and confidence that lead to more regular school attendance and higher grades, and mentors gain awareness of individual differences and satisfaction from using their abilities to help others. Noah, a volunteer in the program says, “I think if we want a brighter future and a more intelligent community, then we have to help each other out and do our best to succeed together.” Presbyterians Sharing supports inner-city communities.

PCC MISSION MOMENTS World Water Day (March 22)

Worldwide, 663 million people live without improved drinking water sources. A lack of clean water is a significant development challenge. In areas of the world where access to water is limited, local Presbyterian World Service & Development partners are responding to improve water sources, build new ones and train volunteers to maintain wells.  Support to improve sanitation ensures water stays clean and prevents the spread of illness. PWS&D equips communities to build hand-washing facilities and latrines and educates members about proper hygiene. The results of this program are transformative and far reaching—clean water allows women and men to harvest crops, care for their families, expand their livelihoods and lead healthy, productive lives. PWS&D helps families access clean water and sanitation.

PCC MISSION MOMENTS International Women’s Day (March 8)

Deeba teaches chemistry at a high school in Afghanistan, where cultural barriers frequently limit opportunities for women and prevent them from entering the workforce. While she has the support of her family, Deeba experienced challenges as a woman working outside the home. One challenge was the lack of training she received in educational methods, making it difficult to teach her lessons. Thanks to a Presbyterian World Service & Development program that supports training for teachers in Afghanistan, Deeba is participating in workshops to help her improve the quality of lessons for her students. Because of this program, she is inspiring students to reach their full potential and setting examples for women. “I can feel the respect for myself in my students’ eyes.”PWS&D supports equal opportunities for women neighourhood becomes, the healthier the families who live there will be.
