Congregational News.

Our guest minister today the Rev. Robin Ross, is a retired Presbyterian minister from Mission. His continuing ministry is through the PCCWeb Daily Devotional, which he has edited on the Internet for our denomination for the past 15 years. It can be accessed at http://daily.presbyterian.ca and is sent out free by e-mail each day to 6,000 subscribers. He and his wife, Evelyn, have three grown children and six grandchildren.

Aileen Rankin’s Memorial Service will be held this Wednesday, May 23^rd at 3:30pm. There will be refreshments served downstairs after the service.

Transforming Church Workshop – Saturday morning, June 16^th 9:30 – 11:00 am at LPC.

Rev. Hibbert will be running a video workshop to help us as a congregation to begin looking at ourselves, where our ministry should be going, and how to set strategies and goals to guide us into the future.

The workshop offers a process rather than a quick fix to whatever issues we may face. If followed through upon, the process could take several months to a year or more.

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce us to the process. Whether or not we decide to further pursue this process, there is benefit in getting us talking together about the direction and future of our congregation. The process is known as The Transforming Church and you can get more information at their website: www.transformingchurch.net If you would like to participate in this workshop, please sign the sheet at the back of the sanctuary or speak to Rev. Hibbert. Thank you for your consideration.

“I have been involved in a Community Development Project in Madagascar for the past 2 years, helping a poor community to gain access to water and start a community garden. Last February, a cyclone (Giovanna) destroyed 70% of what we built so we need to rebuild before we can start on our new projects like the community kitchen or tree planting. Presbyterian Sharing

MISSION TRIP: Taiwan - Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing help connect people in Canada with long-term mission partners. In November 2011, 11 people from across Canada travelled to see first-hand the mission work of The Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT). Journeying through Taiwan from north to south, the group visited theological colleges, hospitals, schools and churches of the PCT. Everywhere they went they heard stories of deep faith and experienced incredible hospitality and generosity. PCC leader Heather Chappell says, “It is good to find a place to call home on the other side of the world. Thanks be to God for this amazing and humbling experience.” Let us pray for our partner church in Taiwan as it is a living example of God’s grace.

Hosting Opportunity - This summer, Langley Christian School will be hosting a number of short-term programs and we are looking for hospitable Christian families to host these Korean students. We will have students in elementary, middle and high school, who will be attending LCS Mondays to Saturdays from 8:45-5:00. Programs range in length from 14 to 25 days. The homestay families are expected to provide meals, a bedroom, and transportation to and from LCS, and to allow the student to join in their family’s regular routines and activities. Remuneration is $30 per student per day. Double placement is encouraged. Our many thanks and deep appreciation to the donor who made the anonymous gift of $35,000 this week to cover the new roofing costs. This really helps our financial situation and is a great encouragement to our congregation. Bringing Water to Malawi – In rural Malawi, too many people are forced to drink contaminated water—an issue Justin Zauya struggled with as the headman for his village. Before a borehole was installed in his community through PWS&D’s clean water program, people in his village travelled long distances to collect water and regularly drank from an unclean stream that ran nearby. The new borehole had a dramatic impact, improving the health and quality of life for all. “We are very thankful to PWS&D for providing us with a borehole to access safe drinking water,” Justin says. “This borehole is not only benefitting 175 households in my village, but also other households from surrounding villages.” Your ongoing support of PW&SD helps build healthier communities in Malawi and around the world. Session Report

The Session of Langley Presbyterian Church met on Friday, April 20th and considered the following items:

1. Session discussed the recommendation from the Presbytery Visitation Team that we consider adding more elders to the Session. To do this, we will first make sure our communicant membership roll is updated. After that, we will begin the process of electing up to three (3) new elders. We will review this process with the congregation and set a date for the election to begin, most likely before the end of June.

2. We also reviewed our financial situation regards our ability to call a half-time minister. However, we still have a ways to go before we are in a position to proceed with such a call. Although our total income brings us very close to the monthly amount we need, a portion of our income is from rentals. In calling a minister, even half-time, we need to base a stipend and benefits upon congregational givings without relying upon potential rental income. We continue to encourage members to give as they can and look forward to a time when we can begin considering a call.

3. Session agreed to receive Eleanor Haddow back into communicant membership of our congregation, and we do so gladly. We appreciate the involvement of all members in our ministry and church life, and look forward to continued growth in our membership.

4. Session commends the Property Committee for its oversight of the roof renovations which will begin on April 30th. The Property Committee is also moving forward on a renovation to the back deck and looking into having the grass cut, front and back, by contract. Session is also looking into forming a small committee to decide upon a fee structure for building rentals to community groups. Both Property and Finance representation will be included on this committee.

5. Rev. Hibbert is planning a workshop for elders and ministry leaders on strategizing for the future. The workshop will be held on a Saturday morning in June and ministry leaders will be contacted with information and the opportunity to participate.

6. Next meeting: Friday, June 1st at 4:30 p.m.

KENYA: Helping to combat HIV&AIDS

Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing help Dr. Rick Allen, a community health physician, and the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) address the health and socio-economic problems of HIV&AIDS. Rick is also teaching classes on community health, HIV&AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, and human sexuality at the Presbyterian University of East Africa. All university students in Kenya are required to take a course in HIV&AIDS, which reflects just how important the whole issue is for the nation. Let us pray for Rick as he continues to carry out God’s work in Kenya.

Caring for Vulnerable Orphans – Wongani is one of over 500,000 orphans living in Malawi. He has faced many obstacles in his life, including the loss of his parents when he was just nine months old and severe malnutrition by age one. Despite these early challenges, Wongani has a bright future ahead of him thanks to a PWS&D supported orphan care program. Now 11 years old, he is at a healthy weight and height and is excelling in his studies at the Apasta Primary School. Through PWS&D, Presbyterians in Canada are helping build brighter futures for orphans like Wongani. Currently, PWS&D is providing 75 orphans attending the Apasta Primary School with free tuition, warm lunches, medical care, school uniforms, stationary, bags and shoes. www.presbyterian.ca/pwsd

CANADA: Equipping future leaders

Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing help to equip theological students who are attending our theological colleges: Knox College in Toronto, Presbyterian College in Montreal, and St. Andrew’s Hall (Vancouver School of Theology) in Vancouver. The Rev. Dr. Victor Cavino, now minister at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Pierrefonds, Quebec, felt called to formal theological education after serving as a lay minister. He says, “I came to Presbyterian College for theological training and I got drawn into the Presbyterian church. I really thought that it was just right for me.” Let us pray for our theological students as they work to become faithful leaders in our churches.

HUNGARY: Educational scholarships for youth

Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing support Mary Gorombey as she serves the Hungarian Reformed Church in Budapest. Mary is coordinating a program that provides financial aid to help young people from Serbia, Romania and Ukraine access education. Mary writes, “I was fortunate to meet some of our supported young people in Romania and Ukraine. It was a heart-warming and touching experience.” Although no longer working directly with refugees, Mary still serves them at St. Columba’s church in Budapest. Let us pray for Mary and the Hungarian Reformed Church as they help make education accessible to young people.

The Journey to Food Security in Pakistan

Many small-scale farmers in Pakistan cultivate plots of land rented to them from landowners who charge exorbitant interest rates by taking a substantial portion of each season’s harvest. The farmers are left with very little food to feed their families. During a poor harvest, farmers may be forced to repay their debts by selling their houses or sending their children away to work. However, many farmers are finding freedom through a PWS&D supported program that teaches them how to multiply yields through improved farming techniques such as intercropping, irrigation and vegetable preservation. As one farmer happily reports, “We used to buy vegetables by the kilo. Now we sell vegetables by the mound (40kg)!” This Lenten season, you can help families escape poverty and debt through gifts to PWS&D. www.presbyterian.ca/pwsd

CANADA: Support through difficult times

Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing help congregations going through times of significant transition. In Nova Scotia, the two-point charge of St. Matthew’s church, Elmsdale and Hardwood Lands Church have been helped through a difficult time with our gifts. The Rev. Gwen Robers writes, “We are grateful for the continued support of The Presbyterian Church in Canada, which continues to give needed and extremely valuable oversight, leadership and assistance through Presbyterians Sharing.” Let us pray for St. Matthew’s and Hardwood Lands churches as they move forward in their ministries.

The Journey to Food Security in Malawi

Fletcher Jere and many others in his community in northern Malawi are all too familiar with the burden of poverty. For generations, people in the area struggled with hunger and malnutrition, until a PWS&D-supported program began in the area. Working with 12 nearby villages, Fletcher uses the training he received to teach other families how to care for their soil, grow nutritious beans and establish seed banks. Community discussion groups address age and gender inequities that prevent families from improving the quality and quantity of food within the household. Fletcher explains that training has improved harvests and now “there is enough food to eat, sell and store for later.” Other farmers are quick to agree that hunger has been dramatically reduced. This Lenten season, you can help ensure people struggling with poverty learn new skills in order grow nutritious food and lead lives with more hope and opportunity. www.presbyterian.ca/pwsd

This past week we lost another long-time member of our Church, Sheila Tomney. Sheila and her husband Rick attended our church for many years and you could always find Sheila in the kitchen helping with the Strawberry Tea or Martha Circle activities. Sheila’s funeral was held yesterday at Fort Langley. Our love and prayers go out to Rick and Family.

Today is our AGM – the meeting will begin shortly after the worship service and coffee time will be after the AGM.

The March newsletter for Camp Douglas is on the bulletin board. Inside, you will find information on rates & dates, the upcoming children & youth ministry retreat and how to contact us should you, or a camper, need to.

Maundy Thursday, April 5 -our annual Maundy Thursday Potluck dinner on April 5 will start promptly at 5:45pm. A sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board.

A Tenebrae service and communion will follow at 7PM in the sanctuary.

The Winter Edition of the Northern Light Newsletter is on the bulletin board for you to read. I have made a couple of copies if you would like one to take home and read.

PWS&D have sent us two thank you letters…

1. for our contributions to the $360,000 sent to assist those recovering in Japan. Through these contributions PWS&D continue to provide victims of this disaster with hot meals, clean water, essential items and medical services. With the cleanup and removal process underway, families are returning home and businesses reopening

2. Through our donation and the Cdn Govt. matching donations, over $2 million has been used to help the plights of those in East Africa. This is an incredible accomplishment that you have been part of.

NICARAGUA: Nutrition education

Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing support Denise Van Wissen, a nutritionist working in Nicaragua. Denise and the SOYNICA team are helping families break the vicious cycle of poverty by teaching about nutrition and healthy food. As a technical advisor to SOYNICA, Denise updates content for educational workshops, leads workshops, and reviews and analyzes periodic reports. Let us pray for Denise and her co-workers as they help families live healthier lives.

The Journey to Food Security in Guatemala

For millions of small-scale farmers in developing countries, livestock are an important source of nutrition and income. In Guatemala, PWS&D is helping families establish small-scale pig farms while teaching farmers how to provide adequate housing, access veterinary services, and ensure their animals are properly fed and cared for. Families use the income from selling pigs to buy more piglets and expand their businesses, improve their homes, purchase nutritious food, access health care and ensure their children stay in school. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Herb McIlveen. Herb & Lisa were original Members of our Congregation and Herb served as an elder for over 50 years. He was the Presbytery Rep for many years, sang in the choir and served our church in so many ways; we all looked forward to his solo performances at Easter and Remembrance Day Services. Herb’s service will be held on Saturday, March 24th at 11am at our church. Our love and prayers go to Lisa and Klaus.

PRESBYTERIAN SHARING

CANADA: Building relationships – Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing support Saskatoon Native Circle Ministry (SNCM) in inner-city Saskatoon. Besides food, warmth, safety and a weekly worship service, the ministry now offers a tutoring program that allows people from the street to work towards the completion of grade twelve. When the ministry moved to its current location in 2008, some people criticized it for being a faith-based organization. SNCM Director, the Rev. Stewart Folster writes, “Now, (these same people) attend our worship service occasionally, and express how they appreciate everything we have to offer.” Let us pray for this vital ministry that offers hope to a population that is too often neglected.

March 4: The Journey to Food Security in Nicaragua

In an impoverished neighbourhood in Nicaragua’s capital city, Managua, where malnutrition, violence and substance abuse are all too common, Elizabeth and her 14-month old daughter, Ashley, are learning to thrive. Thanks to a PWS&D program in their area, Ashley is overcoming anemia as her mother learns the importance of a balanced diet and proper nutrition. Every week, program staff visit Elizabeth and Ashley to discuss a variety of issues, including good nutrition, brain development and financial budgeting. For many families in this neighbourhood, raising healthy children is not just about earning enough money to put food on the table, but about learning to purchase and prepare healthy meals. If you would like to be involved in this service as a reader or in other ways, please contact Shawn Brouwer. (Maundy comes from the Latin word “mandatum” and refers to the new command Jesus gave “That ye love one another; as I have loved you.” Tenebrae is another Latin term meaning “shadows” and recalls Christ’s final days of ministry on earth.)

Sunday Music – Some people in the Congregation like to be able to read the music for the songs that are not in the Book of Praise. I have made up 3 blue binders of these songs. They will be on the bookcase at the back for you to borrow.

PRESBYTERIAN SHARING

ROMANIA: The Gift of Music – Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing support Brian Johnston, an English and music teacher at the Hungarian Theological Institute in Cluj, Romania and an avid photographer. Brian’s choir of theological students travels throughout Transylvania, sharing their gift of music with people needing hope and grace. The choir was recently able to purchase a portable piano, helping them minister in areas that lack instruments. Brian is thankful for the support and inspiration he receives from Canadian Presbyterians. Let us pray for Brian and his choir and they share music and hope.
