August 29 – Rev. Dr. Gerard Booy

We welcome you to this service of worship on the Lord’s Day.

Welcome & Announcements

The Call to Worship:
O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek You;
my soul thirsts for You; my flesh faints for You,
as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
So I have looked upon You in the sanctuary,
beholding Your power and glory.
Because Your steadfast love is better than life,
my lips will praise You.
So I will bless You as long as I live;
in Your name I will lift up my hands.

Hymn:  Joyful, joyful we adore you           #410
1.  Joyful, joyful we adore you, God of glory, Lord of love.
Hearts unfold like flowers before you, opening to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away;
giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day.

2.  All your works with joy surround you; earth and heaven reflect your rays;
stars and angels sing around you, centre of unbroken praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea,
chanting bird and flowing fountain, join to praise you joyfully.

3. You are giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blessed,
wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest.
God Creator, Christ our Saviour, all are yours who live in love.
Teach us how to love our neighbour; lift us to your joy above.

4. Morning stars, awake the chorus; mortals, join with every part,
for what joy is set before us
as Christ’s love joins heart to heart! Ever singing, march we onward,
victors in the midst of strife; joyful music leads us sunward, in the triumph song of life.

Prayer of Adoration, Confession and Assurance of Pardon

Scripture Reading: Psalm 62 and Matthew 11: 25-30

 Sermon:   “Our Rest In Jesus”

 Hymn: Just as I am, without one plea   vs. 1, 2 & 5    #682
1. Just as I am, without one plea,
but that thy blood was shed for me,
and that thou biddest me come to thee,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

2. Just as I am, though tossed about
with many a conflict, many a doubt,
fightings and fears within, without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

5.Just as I am thy love unknown, has broken every barrier down,
Now to be thine, yea, thine alone, of that free love
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

The Offertory Prayer: (in unison)

Oh God, Giver of all good gifts – in gratitude we bring our gifts today.  Use them to the end that Your kingdom may come and Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Bless the gift and the giver.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.

Hymn: For the fruits of His creation                 #802
For the fruits of his creation, thanks be to God;
for his gifts to every nation, thanks be to God;
for the ploughing, sowing, reaping,
silent growth while men are sleeping,
future needs in earth’s safe-keeping, thanks be to God.

In the just reward of labour, God’s will is done;
in the help we give our neighbour, God’s will is done;
in our world-wide task of caring, for the hungry and despairing,
in the harvests men are sharing, God’s will is done.

For the harvests of his Spirit, thanks be to God;
for the good all men inherit, thanks be to God;
for the wonders that astound us, for the truths that still confound us,
most of all that love has found us, thanks be to God.
Amen.

Fred Pratt Green (b.1903)

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen

Hymn: Softly and tenderly, Jesus is calling”          #640
1. Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling,
calling for you and for me:
patiently Jesus is waiting and watching,
watching for you and for me.

Refrain:
“Come home (come home),
come home (come home),
ye who are weary, come home ” ;
earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling,
calling, O sinner, “Come home!”

2. Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading,
pleading for you and for me ?
Why should we linger and heed not his mercies,
mercies for you and for me ?

Refrain

3.Oh for the wonderful love he has promised,
promised for you and for me;
though we have sinned, he has mercy and pardon,
pardon for you and for me.
