Before His ascension, Jesus instructed, “Go make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey my commands. I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19–20).
Baptism is performed in the name of the Father, Son, and Spirit, defining it as “Christian” baptism. When saved, we are “baptized” by the Spirit into the Body of Christ, the universal church. First Corinthians 12:13 states, “We were all baptized by one Spirit to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.” Water baptism typically represents this Spirit baptism.
Christian baptism publicly affirms faith and discipleship. In baptism, a person silently declares, “I believe in Christ; He has cleansed my soul from sin, granting me a new life of sanctification.”
